These photos show one of our earlier bunding installations with the product having seen tens of thousands of traffic movements over time.

The Flexi-Bund floor bunding product has been laid around the perimeter of this out door wash bay effectively containing all run off from the wash process. Vehicles that are to be washed simply drive over the floor bunding. The floor bunding momentary compresses as the vehicles wheels compress it and then instantaneously resumes its previous shape once the pressure of the wheels has passed - time and time and time again.

The Flexi-Bund floor bunding product is used by thousands of wash bays, mechanical work shops and marinas throughout Australia providing a cost effective and simple to install alternative to permanent bunding structure that restrict and impede traffic movements.

In addition the daily time pressures of running your business often mean that important things that are not urgent go to the bottom of the pile.

The Government Legislation tab on this website provides some introductory information of a general nature to bunding and floor bunding requirements in each state of Australia. For best practice with respect to bunding and floor bunding requirements companies should refer to the Australian Standards set by Standards Australia.

Standards Australia is recognised by the Government as Australia's peak Standards body. It coordinates standardisation activities, develops internationally aligned Australian Standards and facilitates the accreditation of other Standards Development Organisations.

AS 1940:2004 The Storage and Handling of Flammable and Combustible Liquids (and subsequent 2 amendments) and AS 3780:2008 The Storage and Handling or Corrosive Substances (and subsequent amendment) provide information on:

1. Bunding and Floor Bunding Material. The bund wall and floor must be constructed from materials impervious to the liquid or toxic substances stored.

2. Bunding Floors and Walls. The bund walls and floors must be strong enough to withhold any spillage from the storage facilities.

3. Bund Heights and Distance from the Bund. Wall bunds at tank storages should be 0.5m to 1.5m high depending on the required containment capacity and the distance from the tank (the closer the tank to the wall, the higher the wall because of the decreased surface area available. The distance between the tank and the bund wall must be at least 1m.

4. Drainage of the Bunded Area. The bund floor must have a collection sump and a graded floor for the collection of liquids. There must be no access to the stormwater system within the bund.

5. Additional Bunded Area Information. A bunded area should contain pipes and pumps for the removal of liquids. The pipe and pump facilities must be arranged within the areas so that the bund can't leak and that the pumps will still operate when the bund is full. It is also recommended that any roof over the bund should be sealed thus preventing precipitation from entering the bund. It is important that the bunded area is properly ventilated ensuring so build of gases and that it does not restrict fire fighting access.

In addition many states are introducing tough new laws pertaining to the collection and disposal of waste water.

Transwash Australia have recently introduced a portable bunding product that is sure to revolutionise the mobile car and truck washing industry. Eco Bund is a portable bund of between 3 and 5 metres in length. It is attached to a wet and dry vacuum and position to capture run off from the wash process. Eco Bund contains the run off which is then sucked through the bund into the wet and dry vacuum resulting in a capture rate of over 90%.

Run off can then be treated by a portable oil and water separator or stored and disposed of according to local epa guidelines.

Eco Bund has been well received by major players in the mobile vehicle washing industry and many local government authorities who have applauded Transwash Australia for the environmental initiative.

Concrete "speed hump" style bunding can be difficult to retrofit and repairs of cracks in the concrete are often costly and ineffective. Negotiating these humps with a fully loaded forklift can also prove dangerous and are a common cause of hazardous spills.

Safe-Waste Industries has developed Flexi-Bund, a new type of driver-over bunding that addresses these problems. It is manufactured from a combination of rubber and PVC which is tough and impervious to high volume vehicle movements. It stands 50mm high and compresses to 10mm when being driven over by a loaded forklift. The Flexi-Bund then returns back to its original shape after the vehicle passes.

Easy to install on concrete, asphalt or any sealed surface, the kit comes with everything you need to lay it yourself including full instructions, surface preparation chemicals, sealant and adhesive. After installing, Flexi-Bund is ready to use in 24 hours and is resistant to oil and grease, diesel, gasoline and chemicals commonly used in the vehicle service and maintenance industry.
